Safety shoes & boots brands keep telling you they are ASTM-approved. So, what exactly is ASTM and how it is relevant to your man's safety at manual labor and industrial works?

Strong against all work hazards

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the employer must ensure that each affected employee uses protective footwear when working in areas where there is a danger of foot injuries due to falling or rolling objects, or objects piercing the sole, or when the use of protective footwear will protect the affected employee from an electrical hazard, such as a static-discharge or electric-shock hazard, that remains after the employer takes other necessary protective measures.

These following occupations should routinely consider protection footwear: shipping and receiving clerks, stock clerks, carpenters, electricians, machinists, mechanics and repairers, plumbers, assemblers, drywall installers, and lathers, packers, wrappers, craters, punch and stamping press operators, sawyers, welders, laborers, freight handlers, gardeners and groundskeepers, timber cutting and logging workers, stock handlers and warehouse laborers.

ASTM International (American Society for Testing and Materials) is an international standards organization that develops and publishes voluntary consensus technical standards for a wide range of materials, products, systems, and services.

ASTM F2413-18 is the standard for Specification for Performance Requirements for Protective (Safety) Toe Cap Footwear covers minimum requirements for the design, performance, testing, and classification of protective footwear. The purpose of this standard is the certification of protective footwear. The certification must be performed by independent third-party laboratories.

It means they shoes that your man wears must be:

1. Puncture & sharp object-resistant

2. Compression resistant

3. Electric-hazard-resistant
